A National Scientific Culture Day, with an Amazing twist

Today was instituted in honor of Rómulo de Carvalho, born on this day. Rómulo de Carvalho was a secondary school teacher, researcher of the History of Science and Education in Portugal (and also a poet, but that’s another topic). He is, to a certain extent, one of our most important science communicators.

Today was the day to pay our tribute to him, by visiting the 1st Jardim-Escola João de Deus de Coimbra. It is a labor of patience to try to sow a harvest that sprouts so late, but the immense joy, curiosity and innocence with which we were received washed our souls clean.

We were at peak anxiety: after all, this is not our normal “audience”! But it went well – looking back, We’re starting to believe it couldn’t have been any other way. No effort was spared, no help was held back: from the Amazing Lab project team, whose implementation was only possible because Feedzai believed in us, from the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra, as well as from the headmistress and respective team of the I Jardim-Escola João de Deus – Coimbra.

We were received as if we were at home. And we want to go back – really. We can’t wait to continue with this collaboration effort. We returned with renewed hope and our hearts full of joy. Tired, but immensely happy.

We did it. Again.

We were among the winning proposals for the second call of the First Foundation initiative. We would like to thank Feedzai and the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra for supporting us.

A big and heartfelt “thank you”!

OpenDEI

Today, we hosted several activities for 12 groups of very special guests – almost 240 students from all over the country. We hoped they enjoyed the visit, at least as much as we enjoyed their interest and participation.

Once upon a time…there was a lathe

A broken one. We even considered throwing it into the trashcan.
But our good friend Diogo from the IT department took the matter into his hands and he fixed it. The problem: it was a broken screw and Diogo made a new one.

More colour, convenience and resources

We received 170 Arduino Kits, which are going to be used in the Tecnologias da Informática course. In 2022/2023, these kits will be lent to our first year students, which will be able to take them home to work and learn autonomously.

We also got a new whiteboard, colourful stock boxes for our perforated wall panels, and a set of square puff cushions.
